In Kyampisi in eastern Uganda, we outfitted a nursery for organic plants with sprinklers under shading cloths, which run on solar power.
Only 30% of the cultivated plants survived due to the tropical heat and irregular watering. By putting up shading cloths and spraying the plants with a water mist at regular intervals, the air cools down significantly and also moistens the plants and soil. This increases the survival rate of the plants to 90%.
Next to the shading cloth greenhouses we installed a dripline to a field where young plants can get used to the tropical sun while staying hydrated. It was a huge operation to ship 600 meters of sprinkler piping and 8500 meters of dripline by airplane and install them in just a few days!
